Is the back casing on the Iphone 3g scratch proof like the screen is?

I own the new iphone 3g, after upgrading from the previous model. I own this because i chose to wait in line for 4 hours friday morning.

Is the shiny back casing scratch proof or resistant like the screen is? It looks like it could scratch easily but assumed that about the iphone screen before which never ever developed a scratch ever.

Does anyone actually have any knowledge on this??

definitely not scratch proof, i've been very careful to not scratch anything but there are already dozens of hairline scratches on the back, the front is still fine.

I ordered a case but it won't be here for another week, so i'm screwed.
